Sufjan Stevens誕生於底特律，成長於紐約，大學時代開始自修作曲與歌唱，會超過二十種以上的樂器，內斂纖細的歌聲，懇切而帶著幽柔特質，句句打動內心，在新人輩出的民謠搖滾歌唱詩人傳統(singer/songwriter)裡，就多種樂器的表現，靈性深邃之歌詞以及歌聲各方面，Sufjan Stevens都讓人喜愛。他有一個計畫，從2003年大獲好評的「Greetings From Michigan」開始，從家鄉出發，為美國五十州的歷史與景點撰寫新民謠，每一州發行一張專輯，「Seven Swans」不屬於"五十州計畫"，其實是將「Greetings From Michigan」裡"Oh God, Where Are You Now? "這首歌的宗教主題擴展成整張專輯。聽起來像是宗教詩歌版本的Death Cab For Cutie，彷彿柏格曼第七封印的中世紀吟遊詩人，死神之舞陰影裡，以音符灑下救贖之光。
